Arthur Haeberle

Obituary of Arthur Haeberle

On August 7, 2017, Arthur Haeberle of Port Colborne passed away at the St. Catharines Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and family.  He is survived by Gertrude (Bodach), his devoted wife of 63-years.  Arthur and Gertrude lovingly raised four children: Karen Haeberle-Hann (Henry) of Peterborough, Deborah Austin (David) of Niagara Falls, Irmgard Davies (Steve) of Mississauga, Judith Curtiss (Michael  “Mick”) of Port Colborne.  He is cherished as “Opie” by his grandchildren; Michael David and Daniel, Sarah (Kevin Dilts) and Bethany (Kenneth Goertz), Annalisha, Kaitlin (Levi Goertz), Michael Keith (Courtney) and Stephen.  Arthur also loved his great-grandchildren Kaleb and Peter.  He is survived by his sisters-in-law Erna Haeberle of Port Colborne, Ottilie Bodach of North York, and Eva Bodach of Thornhill, as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada, Germany, and the United States.  He was predeceased by his brothers Karl, Johann, and George; sisters Karolina and Loise; and brothers-in-law Alex Bodach and Paul Bodach.

Arthur was born February 12, 1929, in what was once a German community near Odessa, Ukraine, to parents Emily and George Haeberle III.  In spite of being just a child during the war, Arthur miraculously escaped through the lines of fighting, and in the process, also led others to safety.  Arthur eventually immigrated to Canada in 1951.  Originally employed at INCO in Port Colborne, he proudly worked at General Motors as a tool setter and lead-hand for 31-years.  He was a devout member of Christian Life Assembly in Port Colborne for over 50-years.

While Arthur will be profoundly missed by his family and friends, it is with the assurance of salvation through the work of Christ that he faced eternity.

The family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence St. in Port Colborne on Friday from 6 – 8 p.m.  Funeral service will be Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at Christian Life Assembly, 484 Barrick Rd in Port Colborne, with a visitation prior at the church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, 2250 HWY #20, Fonthill.
