Obituary of Donald Davis

Passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on February 6, 2019. 

Born in Oshweken, Six Nations Reservation on May 9, 1932, his family moved to Port Colborne in 1936. Don began his teaching career 1951 in Port Colborne. He taught at C.M.T., McKay School and for a short time in Niagara Falls. He was school principal for 35 years and retired in 1992. Don obtained his B.A. at McMaster University and graduated from the State University of New York, Buffalo, N.Y. with a Master of Education degree. He served on many educational committees as a member and Chairperson during his career as Principal. He served the community on the Jaycees, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Chairman of the midget-juvenile hockey division, member of the Niagara Trillium Foundation and served as guide at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. Don taught piano, theory and harmony at Canisius College in Buffalo for many years and at the Welland Music Academy. He loved jazz (especially Oscar Peterson) and delighted many with his own formidable piano playing. He always enjoyed a game of golf, cards, pool and looked forward to any challenge with his great friend the late Jack May.

Don is survived by his daughter Jayne Davis (Duff Waring), his sister Maureen Stewart, his nieces Deborah Scott and Barbara Ferrell (Denis), and Geoff, Melanie, Brendan and Andrea Davis, as well as many great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Martha (nee Phillips) 2014, his son Gregory 2014, his mother Lena Evelyn Davis (nee Hill), his father Alexander Washington Davis, and brothers John Gerald, Robert Marvin & Ronald Alan.

The family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Tuesday from 6 – 8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday February 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Armstrong Chapel. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Wainfleet. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Port Colborne Lions Club, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer Society.
